Estoi, Moncharapacho, Tavira, St Catrina, and Loule all have quite
large monthly markets. Olhao itself boasts a fine market each saturday
incorporating a fish market. Further a field is the grand market of
Portimao which is held the first Monday of each month.
Shopping
- Faro, Olhao, Loule, Almancil are the nearest shopping centres with
Faro now having a terrific new shopping mall, well worth a trip with
lovely marble malls amid lots of fountains all open air. You will find
all types of modern high street goods there.
Historic
Interests
- Estoi, the Roman ruins and Estoi Palace, Tavira Bridge and of course
Faro Old town, it's so nice to sit in the square by the cathederal and
have a cool drink!! Like all European countries Portugal has an abundance of old castles
and fortunately for visitors to this region one of the most impressive
and best preserved is only about an hours drive away dominating the skyline
of Silves.
Originally a Moorish stronghold Silves castle was the scene of epic
battles and sieges in the 12th and 13th centuries. You can walk freely
around the grounds for spectacular views. Silves was once the capital
of the Algarve and sailing ships used to moor in the harbour.
